Tyrol Living & Café
is a
historic inn in
Nova Levante/Welschnofen, a village with a long tradition of tourism. With the construction of the
Val d'Ega road in 1860, guests came to the mountain village for the first time. The tourism pioneer Theodor Christomannos recognised the importance of a connecting road between Nova Levante/Welschnofen, the
Passo Costalunga/Karerpass and
Vigo di Fassa. In 1896, the road and the
Grand-Hotel-Carezza were inaugurated. Numerous illustrious guests such as Arthur Schnitzler, the Empress Sissi, Karl May, Agatha Christie, Winston Churchill, and many more spent their holidays in this hotel steeped in history.
Many years of hardship and difficulty during the two world wars were followed by an enormous economic upswing in
South Tyrol and Nova Levante/Welschnofen. Numerous hospitality businesses were established and tourism flourished once again. This was also the time when the Hotel Tyrol was built.
Josef Pattis and his wife
Marianna Kafmann began building the hotel in
1972
and it was opened at Christmas 1973. For 32 years they ran the establishment with 15 rooms and a restaurant with 100 seats. In the years between 2006 and 2021, the hotel was leased out.
In 2021, Josef and Marianna Pattis decided to pass the hotel on to the next generation. The siblings Petra, Harald and Bernd Kohler took over the business and turned it into the
Tyrol Living & Cafè.
The
Kohler siblings felt it was important to preserve elements of the historic inn and combine them with modern aspects. For example, the traditional "Zirmstube" (stone pine parlour) was preserved; it had been built by the Kohler carpentry workshop in Nova Levante/Welschnofen using stone pine wood from the Pattis family's sawmill in Switzerland.
